It doesn’t take a new year for a new you. It as simple as picking a day, any ordinary day like today and making a choice. Your journey does not have to begin on a treadmill at a gym you feel uncomfortable in. You don’t need a crazy diet or an endless amount of hours of intense exercise to become healthy and achieve your ultimate weight goal. So where do you start? Here are five of the easiest day to day things you can do to improve your health and sense of well-being:
1. Add Soluble Fiber to your diet:
No chalky fiber supplements needed here! Soluble fiber has been shown to dramatically improve heart health, improve blood sugars and enhance digestive health. Whole food sources of soluble fiber like oats, apples, pears, beets, beans and bananas to name a few, help with two things: regulates digestion and also whisks away cholesterol that clogs your arteries and combats toxins that weaken immunity at the same time. They are not only nutritious but keep you full and satisfied!
2. Always be looking for ways to move:
Do not let the couch suck you in to its evil ways. Get up and move! Whether it’s a random dance party to your favorite song in the middle of the living room or parking on the far side of the entrance of a grocery store for some extra steps, it’s all about being on the move. Walk your dog, and if you don’t have a dog borrow your friend’s dog. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. I promise you will be feeling like Rocky Balboa with two fists in the air and “Gonna fly now” by Bill Conti playing in the background by the time you reach the top. Being active doesn’t always mean lifting weights and running five miles on a treadmill, but it’s rather doing small choices that help you live a healthier life.
3. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!:
Most people skip breakfast and that is their first mistake of the day. If you want your metabolism to get to work, eat when you wake up and don’t wait until hours to do so. Your body will think you are starving and it will all go downhill from there. Start your day with some scrambled eggs and toast bread or a smoothie or an oatmeal. DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST!
4. Drink an ocean of water:
With this heat, most of us don’t drink the daily recommended amount of water each day. We rather reach for a nice cold coca cola than an ice cold water bottle. Dehydration can make us irritable, tired, and masquerade as hunger nudging us to eat that 3 p.m. burger meal from McDonalds. Reward your body! Down some H20 and challenge yourself. Can you drink a 32-oz water bottle by midday and another before bed?! It’s up to you to find out!
5. Get some Zzzz’s:
You wake up, go to work, and barely get four hours of sleep. It’s a never ending cycle of adult life but what you have to realize is that sleep is good for you as exercise and your overall health. The lack of sleep has a negative impact on your mood, mental clarity, body, and weight. Start viewing an 8-hour sleep as a healthy choice. More sleep lowers stress! Get more shuteye!
There are many more little things you could do to improve your health. Drink more water! Eat more greens and if you don’t like them, get creative with it. Make yourself a green smoothie! Eat a fresh piece of produce with every meal! Make the choice today. Like they say, es mejor prevenir que lamentar. If you have any more suggestions, leave a comment down and help a life!
